Happy Halloween!!!

I am loving the royal costumes worn by the cast of the Today Show this morning! Which costume do you think is the best?

I am also loving this little girl's Chanel purse costume. It is one of the most creative and fashionable I have ever seen! It was posted on the Facebook page for Harper's Bazaar Arabia last week. Definitely a change from the usual princess, super hero or beauty queen!

What was your Halloween inspiration this year?

Island Getaway

I am off for the week to take a much needed vacation in Turks & Caicos! After hardly using any vacation days this year the time has finally come! I will have lots of fantastic giveaways when I return. Some hints? Something chocolate and sweet, and something that I will be using on my trip!

Happy {Pumpkin} Friday!

It is getting closer and closer to Halloween and I am starting to see pumpkins everywhere. From a mini pumpkin on someone's desk at the office to pumpkins and mums outside an apartment building entrance to the latest flavor of coffee, pumpkins are all over the city in all shapes and sizes. Warm up this fall with a pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin soup. Happy {Pumpkin} Friday!

Enjoy the weekend!

Tastes Like Fall: Soft Serve Fruit

I love Soft Serve Fruit. If you remember back in July, I posted about their new store opening in Union Square. It is my favorite place in New York City to get a delicious gluten and dairy free dessert. As a quick reminder, Soft Serve Fruit is composed of only 3 ingredients: real fruit, filtered water and a touch of organic cane sugar.

Back in July the flavors offered, such as mango, were better suited for warm weather. Soft Serve Fruit now has two new delicious flavors for fall: APPLE and PUMPKIN...YUM. Pictured above is my favorite apple combination. I keep it simple with the apple Soft Serve Fruit topped fresh apples and sprinkled with cinnamon. The pumpkin flavor is also delicious with pumpkin seeds and cinnamon. There are plenty of other toppings that will go well with these flavors. Be sure to stop by either NYC location {Union Square or Upper East Side} to get a guilt free taste of fall!

Book Club Pick: The Marriage Plot

One of the best choices I have made since moving to New York was joining a book club. One of my good friends at work, Julie, started a book club with her older sister and invited me to join. Although Julie was the only person I knew at first, I have met some great new friends.

Each time book club meets, we pick a restaurant to go with the book we have just finished. For example, we recently read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand {highly recommended}. The main character, Louie Zamperini, was Italian so we chose a nearby Italian restaurant. We then bring a list of discussion questions and select our next book as well. Going forward I would like to share with you the book we have chosen to read. Let me know your thoughts if you have read the book or if you have any suggested reads!

Our next book club pick is The Marriage Plot: A Novel by Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Eugenides. The book describes the lives of three college seniors at Brown in the early 80s and their transition from college to adult life. The Marriage Plot is a best seller on Amazon and I am looking forward to starting a new book by such a highly acclaimed author.

Let me know if you have read any of these books or if you have any book club suggestions! Happy reading!

A Digital Life: Online Magazines

I had no idea digital magazines existed a few years ago. Earlier this year my wonderful Mom sent me a New York Times article about the growing online magazine industry. Though the article was controversial, it caught my attention and got me interested in a new form of publication.

All of the magazines are free and can be accessed via the web. You can "subscribe" to the magazine by entering your contact information to receive new issue notifications. I started reading a few of the magazines mentioned in the article and enjoyed the new experience. I wanted to share some of my favorite digital magazines and I hope that you enjoy them as well!

Matchbook Magazine is one of my go to digital magazines. It is published on a monthly basis so there is always something to look forward to at the beginning of each month. Matchbook is a "field guide to a charmed life" and features style, design, culture and history. I love the "editor's wish list" portion as well as the "date book" calendar for each month. Here are some examples pages of Matchbook:

Another favorite digital magazine is High Gloss magazine which is published every 2 months. This magazine also features style and fashion but has more of an interior design focus. The most recent issue has a fantastic article about the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A recent digital magazine that launched this past weekend is Sweet Lemon Magazine. Sweet Lemon's founders are college students who share fashion, advice and inspiration for young women. I am excited to see Sweet Lemon grow and evolve.

All three magazines are unique and provide new fashion finds, style inspiration and insight on a variety of topics at no cost. I hope you start to follow and enjoy Matchbook, High Gloss and Sweet Lemon as the digital magazine industry continues to develop.

A Time to Plant: Signed Book Giveaway!

James Farmer is one of the most talented and kind people that I have ever met. His smile instantly lights up a room and he makes you feel immediately at ease. Not only is James a fantastic person, he is an incredibly gifted gardener, designer and cook. James is a regular contributor to Southern Living Magazine {his work is on the cover this month I might add!} and he now has his own book, A Time to Plant: Southern Style Garden Living. James has kindly signed one of his gorgeous books to giveaway to a lucky Particularity reader!! To enter, "like" Particularity's Facebook page {link provided}. If you have already done so, you can comment on this post!

James grew up in Kathleen, Georgia and was raised organic and "farm to table". He became interested in traditional Southern cooking by cooking next to his grandmother who always used ingredients from a kitchen garden. James has developed old recipes to make them new while incorporating entertaining and decorating into the mix. His latest book is absolutely beautiful and truly reflects his skills.

James' book is the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys gardening, cooking, decorating or entertaining. Although I am not from the south, I still love every single page. James touches on subjects from fantastic hearty recipes to the correct technique for drying flowers. There is even a section that highlights hydrangeas!! A man after my own heart.

The photographs and sketches in this book are stunning. Not only does A Time to Plant provide a wealth of knowledge, it is aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.

Don't these photographs put you in the mood for fall?

James is known in his family for his iced tea, also know as "Farmer's Tea". I will leave you with his delicious recipe which can also be found on his blog, All Things Farmer

Farmer's Tea
  • Bring 6-7 cups of water to a rolling boil.
  • Add 4 bags of Lipton (or whatever brand you prefer) and 1 bag of Earl Grey (Bigelow) and remove from heat.
  • Let the tea bags steep for about five minutes near the warm eye of the stove.
  • Add 1-1½ cups of sugar to about 2-3 cups of water (I use a 1 to 2 ratio) and dissolve the sugar in the water over a medium low heat…remove immediately from heat once the sugar has dissolved and has become a somewhat clear syrup. If you bring it to a boil, you’ll have the makings for candy and not tea!
  • Combine the steeped tea and simple syrup into a large pitcher or split between two half gallon pitchers. If you’re using a glass pitcher, be sure to have a metal knife or spoon to pour the tea over so the hot liquid won’t bust the glass…
  • Fill the pot with the tea bags in it one more time with water and add it to the pitcher…you can add a bit more water if need be. Stir with a large knife or spoon. This should provide you with about 16 cups of tea or 1 US Gallon.
  • Serve over ice (remember tea continues to steep or “get stronger” as it sits, so it’s weakest once it’s first made) and with wedges of lime. Enjoy!

Don't forget to enter to win James' signed book, A Time to Plant. His book is breathtaking and James brings a fresh and young voice to the art of entertaining. James has a love of life that resonates in A Time to Plant making it a thoughtful gift for any friend or family member.
