After seeing a gold magnolia leaf wreath hanging in the window of a New York City boutique, I was inspired to start decorating for the holidays. I loved the classic gold wreath that was simple and elegant, but did not want to pay the $200 price tag. While I was home for Thanksgiving I told my Mom about the idea and she suggested that I use the magnolia leaves from our backyard as a start.
We headed to Michael's and picked up a foam wreath form, gold spray paint {make sure to buy the quick dry variety}, wire and pins. All of these items can be found at any local craft store and the cost was less than $20. If magnolia leaves aren't accessible you can often find replicas at craft stores or ask for leftovers from florists.
Step 1: Spray paint the leaves
Step 2. Wrap a few leaves together with the wire to cover the width of the form and fasten to the foam wreath by making a U-shaped fastener
Step 3. Once the top of the wreath is covered, you have to make sure to cover all of the "mechanics", i.e. exposed foam form. I used some pins that my Mom uses for flower arranging to help secure the leaves
4. When the foam is no longer visible, give the leaves once last touch-up of gold paint
Step 5. Hang the wreath with a ribbon of choice! Red, green or gold are all great choices
VoilĂ ! I was very happy with the result and glad I did not spend $200 for a very similar wreath. The process was fun {especially since my Mom helped} and took about 90 minutes to complete. Some other variations? Use silver paint, incorporate holly and pine cones, or garnish with any festive decorations. Happy Holidays!
